Is Astrology the New Religion?

Is Astrology the New Religion?

For many young people the answer might be yes--but what is the unspoken Mystery behind astrology? Or maybe “Theology” might be a better word than Mystery. Here’s what most of us don’t consider when we approach astrology for the first time: There is a huge unspoken mystery here with perhaps a few barbs attached…let me explain:

Let’s say you’ve got a challenging birth chart with hard aspects to your Sun and Moon and maybe the 8th house is involved. And you suffered a tough life. Your astrologer points out that your parents and early home life was indeed—horrid! As if you didn’t know; you nod your head; your father abandoned the family and you were always terribly irritated by your mother. They were responsible for your later life troubles of course….

But who speaks about the fact that you came into this life with those aspects? Before your parents had a chance to do their nasties? Those aspects in the birth chart were there from the moment you were born.

This doesn’t make the parents any less guilty, but it suggests that one’s life destiny has an imprint from a very early point. How early? The moment of birth.

Most astrologers believe that the re-incarnating Soul actually chooses the time, day and place to be born, between lives, so that it will learn and grow from unique experiences in this lifetime. Could a wise soul, in that mysterious space between lives actually choose to be born to young souls who might mistreat him? Could it be that it’s not your personal “bad Karma” but a choice made? Perhaps. Or--could there be unfinished painful business between the parents and the child that needs to continue to be played out because the Karma has not been healed yet? Perhaps, indeed.

This way of seeing things implies life isn’t random; even the tough stuff. It implies meaning and purpose in our challenges even when we can’t see it. It’s a hard pill to swallow, that on some level, in some mysterious pre-birth choice, you felt spiritually ambitious enough to re-engage with the guy who deeply betrayed you in your last life. Because you want to heal it. And so you come in with a hard start to life; perhaps abuse or neglect, which leads to bitterness or healing.

These ideas pre-suppose the whole theology of Reincarnation, and as an Evolutionary Astrologer, I can’t see it any other way. But how amazing is this! People venture into “Pop-Sun Sign-Astrology” and sometimes it takes a long time to truly fathom that it has its roots deep in Eastern Wisdom and theology. We often see strong astrological aspects between people when we do a comparison chart between 2 people; such as a mother and child. The amount of significant aspects between the 2 charts is often truly synchronistic, particularly when looking at the Nodes—that’s one place where past lives can be seen.

And perhaps this is exactly why so many young people are taking to astrology these days: it makes meaning where before there was none. It takes away some blame and reasserts personal responsibility and compassion. This is becoming the new Theology; the new Religion. It’s not just personality types and future partners, but regaining a sense of Spiritual Mystery which can’t be rationally proved nor destroyed. Sounds pretty religious to me.
